Hi everyone, I faced a disk space issue with my Alienware m15 R4 laptop. After checking the specifications, I installed a Gen3 2280 SSD. When I tried to boot, the system didn’t recognize the drive, even though it fit. I thought a custom heat shield might help, but it seemed to work either way. I’m hoping someone can advise me on how to properly secure the drive and avoid similar problems in the future. Thanks for your help!

Attempt to reinstall again, securing the device with electrical tape. Searching online reveals it matches your laptop’s size—2280—and possibly a BIOS setting for a specific slot. Reviewing Disk Management, verify if the drive is labeled with a letter.

Found a picture indicating a heat shield covering both M.2 slots to secure the SSD. Did you receive two shields, one per slot? If the second is absent, it might require extra force to achieve proper contact angle in the slot.

I figured it out after a while. For the random discovery of this article ten years later, I’ll explain it now. I reopened the laptop and examined the main drive with the heat shield. It was the standard size 2280, and the screw holes lined up perfectly. When I reinstalled the primary, I noticed I had to lift it slightly for the shield to fit properly. Then I checked the new drive. There was room just below the slot that was high enough for the SSD to slide in and snug enough to feel secure. So yes, in a few years we’ll essentially: https://youtu.be/-zHVW7Zy_vg?si=IgvG8HPxE4cqW2wO Thanks for your assistance.
