I really enjoy Pop!_OS. I've used it for some time now. My motherboard was failing, so I upgraded and reinstalled Pop. It continued to freeze. While working on programming assignments, it would lock up during browsing or when trying to browse the web. Each time I had to restart because the kill command didn't help. I tried troubleshooting myself and contacted support, but no hardware problems were found and nobody could explain what was going wrong. Eventually, I decided to remove Pop and switch to Mint. After setting everything up for school—about two hours of work—I still experienced freezing. I thought my computer was haunted. Then I found this helpful thread and resolved the problem https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=2278146. Now I'm wondering if I should reinstall Pop or what antivirus options work best for Linux. Thanks! UPDATE: The issue remains unresolved, last edited April 19, 2023 by Elektra57 (issue still not fixed)
As soon as I mentioned the problem was resolved, I returned and it froze once more. Not sure what’s happening. It worked until I installed Discord. Just turned off the hardware acceleration now. Hope it helps.
I'll hold off on reinstalling Pop until the freezing problem gets resolved. It's really frustrating.
Pop and Mint share many similarities in their design, which explains why issues keep recurring. The solution isn't fully resolved because the fix relies on using only an Nvidia GPU, a feature not aligned with Optimus technology. Because of stability concerns, it’s best to try the most reliable systems available. Since you enjoy Pop and Mint, I’m guessing you prefer straightforward installation. I suggest the following options: 1. Mageia 2. GhostBSD 3. MX Linux. Nobara Project is another choice—it’s simple to set up but isn’t as stable as the previous ones. If you’re okay with a more challenging installation, you might also explore Void Linux, Artix Linux, or NixOS. Regarding security, good anti-malware tools can sometimes introduce new risks. Hackers often exploit gaps in these programs, making browsers and other apps harder to protect. Many modern threats bypass traditional antivirus defenses. Additionally, some popular solutions like Avast may prevent updates for your operating system, which can leave you vulnerable. Overall, anti-malware adds complexity without significantly improving safety.
There’s no solution for Pop or Mint. Changing them again seems unavoidable. Appreciate your support! I prefer avoiding paid antivirus tools. Clam was a decent free option for Linux.
First of all, good luck trying to get help with ANY of those distros. Second to add to the antimalware message, just bear in mind while not malware free linux by nature is far more secure than windows through permission sandboxing (aka root vs a standard user) and egenrally a cleaner code base. Can you share the log here?
