Hello, I have a query about my prebuilt HP PC. The specs are: CPU i3 4150, GPU Gtx1050ti, 8GB DDR3 RAM at 1600Hz, 750GB HDD, WD Green SSD, 300W PSU. My BIOS is up to date and the i3 is dual-core but struggling with games. I’m considering upgrading to an i5 4690K or 4590—would that work without overclocking? Thanks for your help!

The i3 4150 features a Haswell processor built for socket 1150. You're able to replace it with any CPU compatible with socket 1150, such as the 4590 or 4690.

Be mindful of your lower power output since 300w is quite limited. I wouldn’t suggest using a chip with a significantly higher TDP than your 4150 (54w). If you don’t plan to overclock, a K chip isn’t necessary. The non-K options will save you some money, which you could invest in a better power supply upgrade.

your psu should manage everything okay. however, look for an i7 4770 or similar because 4c/4t cpus aren't really worth upgrading to

I searched for options around the prices you mentioned. There are many listings available, but I’m unsure whether buying from eBay offers any advantages.

The 4770 at $110 is significantly more advantageous. Upgrading from the i3 to the i5 4690k represents a modest but meaningful improvement.

I'll check eBay to see if I can locate a suitable item and purchase it.

Additionally consider the 4770(t,s,k), 4790 (s,t,k) or the unusual i7 4875t. Although the s and t lines may run a bit slower, they remain the superior upgrade option.
