Hey there! It's been a while since my i5 4670K started getting really hot—sometimes over 95 degrees. I’ve been using it for almost nine years now, and I always managed to keep things cool at around 4.2 GHz with a solid overclock. But now it’s getting worse than before. I’ve tried almost everything: cleaning the whole system, swapping out the cooler and heatsink for a high-end Noctua model, reapplying thermal paste (the one that came with the cooler), resetting the CPU frequency and BIOS settings, testing different RAM configurations, using another power supply, and even remounting the PC multiple times. Despite all these efforts, it’s now more problematic than ever. My system crashes frequently and sometimes I can’t even access the BIOS—no display or USB signal. I’m really frustrated and feel like I have no choice but to consider a complete hardware upgrade. If anyone has faced this issue, I’d really appreciate hearing about their experience!
Open MSI Afterburner to view the temperature graph. It might be the thermal interface material between the CPU silicon and the IHS that’s the issue, especially since you’ve upgraded your cooler with identical settings. While it’s usually fine, 4th generation chips can dry out the TIM. You might need to desiccate it before proceeding, and then consider whether repairing it is worth the effort compared to a cheaper replacement.
The temperatures are really high. I quit playing after just five minutes because the CPU hit 99 degrees fast. The issue is that I’m not an expert in PC hardware—I’m more of a user and that’s it. I want to upgrade to a 12th generation model, but the prices here in France are crazy (an i3 12100f with an h610m motherboard and 16GB DDR4 memory costs nearly 400 euros).
