Hey everyone, my Asus laptop with a 780m had been great for VR, working well on B&S and Alyx. After a couple of months off, I tried using it again and the top bar turned red because the GPU driver was outdated, causing it to stop functioning. I mostly rely on my Rift for Unity VR testing and really need it for advanced work. Can anyone assist me in spoofing my GPU ID for Oculus, disabling the GPU check, or performing some registry fixes? The Oculus support chat didn’t help much—one suggested it would get back to you, but I’m desperate. Thanks!

It seems there isn't a dedicated "GPU for Oculus" component—it relies on your system's GPU. You might attempt to use DDU with your 780M drivers and reinstall them, though support for that chipset has ended. The Meta team could have discontinued older driver updates as well. Restarting the Oculus app would also refresh all necessary drivers for the Rift.

They're trying to trick the system into thinking their GPU is compatible by spoofing its status. Reinstalling drivers won't help since the issue lies with Oculus expecting a GT1030 GPU. A new automated check now verifies if your GPU has an update newer than three years, not just whether it's present in that version. The current setup should let users bypass this requirement, which doesn't align with the company's goals.

The GPU is ten years old and sees very little activity, so it’s no longer monitored in the hardware survey. If you want the device to operate normally, restore it to a working state and take it offline from the internet to stop any future updates. The way it verifies doesn’t matter; what matters is that outdated legacy systems are being ignored.

Recent updates have expanded driver compatibility since 2018, especially for VR support. The latest versions now cover newer hardware. Your setup appears to be using updated drivers either from NVIDIA or via Windows Update.

You're running the latest Nvidia driver available for your GPU. No updates were required to maintain performance, and no new features were introduced that would affect gameplay or Unity functionality. This appears to be a routine verification step.

I'll look for a restore point, but even then it would need internet access. My main machine is the one I use. Upgrading isn't feasible right now—it'll take months before I can afford a new secondhand laptop. Not supporting this GPU isn't saving them any money; it can run Alyx. That's not fair to Zuckerberg. Update: I tried it, the drivers were updated but it still doesn't work properly, so I'm keeping searching.

Almost every message I receive from Meta comes from a different person. They tried calling once earlier, but when I emailed them they kept insisting to update or upgrade and then asked me to explain why things didn’t work after two months. When I reminded them that it functioned well before, they suggested I check it out for them. I arranged another call, hoping they’d take this seriously. They seem willing to simplify things for those unfamiliar with tech, maybe offering a basic registry or an in-app change that lets experienced users bypass hardware checks. This means I might be losing some users who prefer ease of use. Still, their support is at least courteous.
