I recently enhanced my computer. It would occasionally shut down unexpectedly, sometimes like a power cut, and even after restarting the fans didn’t get it running again. I tried fixing it by turning it off and on for an hour, but the problem persisted. I upgraded my CPU, motherboard, RAM, SSD, and graphics card. The only remaining parts were the case, power supply, and one hard drive. It functioned well for a while, but starting Sunday it began to fail again—suddenly losing power without warning. This happens without any input from me. I’m unsure what to do next. My thoughts are that my PSU might be faulty, but I don’t know how to test it. Here are my specifications: CPU – Intel Core i7-12700f; RAM – Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x 16GB DDR4; GPU – Gigabyte RTX 3070 Gaming OC 8G LHR; Motherboard – Gigabyte Z690 Ud D4; SSD – Kingston NV1 1TB; PSU – Corsair RM750 2019.
Linus mentioned the RM series was adjusted specifically for RTX 30 compatibility. Perhaps your power supply is the 2019 model, which might struggle with the increased demands of the RTX 30 series. This could trigger overdraw protection, leading the PSU to shut down. I’m not an expert on this.
I can suggest ways to troubleshoot the problem without replacing the power supply unit.
Good beginning @Dukesilver27- Also, OP, verify your RAM's SKU or part number with the board manufacturer's QVL list. It seems this issue is emerging if not already—just discovered my Ballistix kit isn't listed for my board, and the RAM appears to have failed in another machine during RMA processing (couldn't reproduce the problem and returned). Not only are my Ballistix DIMMs missing from the QVL, but I can't locate a list that includes them. My brand-new build unexpectedly stopped booting with no video output, despite all DIMMs working. The board was RMA'd but turned out to be functioning properly. Recently, one DIMM started causing random audio glitches and audio/video drops during gaming, while the other triggers a complete POST failure. The first DIMM also causes a non-POST state under heavy graphics load—power shutting off is a clear sign. Updated August 9, 2022 by An0maly_76 Added more details
It seems like a GPU driver or browser extension might be the cause. Consider updating them.
I took some time to understand it, but I located the part number for my RAM (Corsair CMK32GX4M2K3600C16) and verified it against the list—it wasn’t there. I ordered new RAM and plan to update once installed. Note: changed a link.
Yes, the kit you ordered matches the item listed on the QVL list.
I've confirmed the parts thoroughly before placing an order—multiple times and twice since I ordered. Copying spaces for pasting also caused some frustration. It's frustrating that these details aren't clearly provided in the manuals anymore. This isn't the first time I've noticed this; many experienced builders have struggled with PWR/RESET wiring connections over the years.
