I believed it would work backward, having reviewed it several times, so I decided to give it a try regardless and simply move to the second slot if needed.

The guide specifies that the connection will stop if the CPU isn't an 11th generation model. You're welcome to select ports 2 or 3 instead.

I'm not familiar with Z590. My setup uses a Z490 board with three M.2 slots powered directly by the chipset. Upgrading to an 11th generation CPU means the first socket becomes CPU direct and operates at 4.0 GHz.
