Hey there. My WD My Cloud has been on my network for a few years now, and it seems to slow down when moving files between local computers. At first I thought the issue was just with the cloud itself. Then I tried transferring data from my office PC using a 2TB drive, and it matched the speed of the cloud—about 11 MB per second. My router is a Netgear Nighthawk 7500 Switch, paired with a TP/Link 10/100/1000 Laptop (Lenovo Y50), which is also my HTPC. All cables are Cat 5e. Could you help me out? Thanks!
The connection speeds appear to be around 100 megabits per second.
Are there just a few connections? It seems like there might be several links involved. Review each one carefully. Also, test connecting the MyCloud directly to the PC without any intermediary.
Can you verify the actual speed of the drive? It's sufficient when the switch and router operate at gigabit rates, but if the drive connects only to the switch at 100mbit, you'll remain restricted to that bandwidth. The likelihood that the drive randomly gets 100mbit is nearly as low as the network link being capped at 100mbit elsewhere.
If I may offer a few suggestions... just to ensure clarity... 1) Avoid auto-negotiation on any ports—switches, routers, or network cards. Set the speed manually at 1Gbps full duplex. 2) Turn on jumbo frames to see how it affects large file transfers; this may boost performance if your network is indeed operating at that speed. 3) Activate flow control on your network card, switch, or router (if supported).
