I recently noticed a problem with my hard drives and solid state drives. When I added up the sizes of all the folders inside these drives, the numbers didn't match what Windows 11 showed me as the total capacity. My main drive C: is 231GB in size, but it shows only about 87GB as free space when I subtract my calculated folder sizes from the actual disk space. There are also smaller drives with problems too. Drive D has a partition that's listed at 62GB, but my math says there should be more free space than what Windows shows me for E: and F:. My calculations don't add up to the total space on each drive. I am confused about why this difference happens in all of these drives. Could you help me understand? Thanks Drive name Total Size Calculated used space Supposed free space (Size - calculated) Actual free space showing Discrepancy C: 231GB 114GB 117GB 87.3GB ~ 29.7GB D: 62GB 44.9GB 17.1GB 6.62GB ~ 10.48GB E: 29.9GB 13.1GB 16.8GB 6.79GB ~ 10.01GB F: 56.9GB 19.3GB 37.6GB 31.5GB ~ 6.1GB

There are lots of reasons for Hidden files and folders. There is also Pagefile Hibernation Sector size vs actual data. For instance, on your C drive, the disk says it is 114GB but the real space is less because some sectors are used by system files instead of your data. The total difference between what you see and how much data is actually there is about 8GB. When a file is very small like 1KB, it takes up more than that in the disk—specifically, each sector is usually 4KB so one file might take up 4KB even if it's just 1KB of content. The extra space needed to hold the data depends on how many sectors are needed for that size file.
