Your gaming laptop is experiencing sluggish performance. (Acer Nitro 5 an515-43)
Hey everyone, my girlfriend has this Acer Nitro 5 an515-43 laptop with an AMD processor and NVIDIA graphics. She wanted to know if I could speed it up. Everything seems to take just a few seconds, but sometimes it takes minutes to launch programs like MS Word. Games also run sluggishly. In the Task Manager, Avast was using most of the resources, and the disk stayed at full capacity—definitely not normal. After uninstalling Avast and removing some startup apps, things improved a bit, though not much. I installed PopOS, which works fine for her since she mainly plays Minecraft and office tasks. It’s better than the original, but I think it should run faster on another system. Minecraft runs smoothly with about 4 chunks of render distance; Warthunder at medium settings works well. I saw videos of people playing GTA V, which makes me wonder if her laptop could handle that. The biggest issue is the long wait for apps to open. She mentioned she can’t open the program herself (that would void the warranty). Thanks for reading!
When using PopOS, ensure GPU drivers are installed. The laptop you found lists an 1650, which should work well for most games at low to medium settings with 60 fps. Confirm it’s utilizing all 8 GB of RAM. Check if the device is actively using the GPU; some sources mention integrated graphics might be defaulting. Adjust power settings—turning off power-saving modes could help. Laptops generally run better when connected to a power source.
Verify if the laptop uses a standard 5400 RPM hard drive or an SSD. If it's an HDD, obtain an SSD in either SATA or M.2 form.
Laptop stays plugged in constantly, so I’m checking if power is actually limited. PopOS displays 6.2GB of RAM; I’ll verify it. I’ll take out the RAM and reinstall it. You’re right about the GPU drivers—I forgot to review them during installation. I’ll fix everything and share the outcomes. Thanks!
