He recently switched to Windows 10 but activated it and got an error saying the key was invalid. Also, the download and upload speeds are extremely slow.

In reverse sequence, Win10 demands significant storage on average internet connections... For someone in a remote area, my download lasted all night. This could explain your experience. How did you get the key? If bought through Microsoft or a trusted provider, reach out directly for assistance. Key mistakes are uncommon, though they occur. OEM keys (from Dell, HP, etc.) may be device-linked and not upgradeable (like moving from Windows 8 to 10). This should provide some clarity.

He received the key from Kinguin (not the best seller, but that's okay).

It could be this problem. There’s a higher chance he received fake software. I bought a low-cost PC stick from Amazon once, and when it started, it already had a profile ready and Windows wasn’t activated. After saving my data and using the good return policy, I thought the price was probably too good to be real. Updated September 19, 2017 by Eclypseon Added stuff.

The site has a dedicated section for activation details. You can also reach out to them, as they typically provide updates promptly.
