I believe AVG Free works well because I used it on my older computer about a year ago, and it included many helpful features in a free antivirus package. However, purchasing a licensed version would offer stronger protection.

Responsible browsing largely removes the necessity for an AV. Still, MSE offers a solid alternative—it's free, uses minimal resources, and avoids those intrusive ads and pop-ups that push for a paid upgrade.
