I had been testing a Windows 10 insider version for about five years, mainly because it offered a free license. The issue with this insider release is that it frequently updates to newer versions, which can be inconvenient. Recently, I realized I didn’t need the machine for a while, so I pressed the update and shut-down option. After some time, the lock screen changed completely—Windows 11 was installed without warning. I’m not too bothered now as long as it works, but it’s odd that it didn’t mention Windows 11 before. Since I’m using an older Ryzen CPU, I’m surprised it just worked on my system without prompting. Many people are discussing the challenges of running Windows 11, yet it just appeared on my PC. Have others experienced this? Should I stick with it or revert to a previous version? I’m not very familiar with these changes, so any advice would be appreciated.
It happened to me also; consider using the insider release preview channel rather than the dev one. If you need to revert, do so within 10 days or it won't be undone.
For insider builds, especially the Dev channel, updates happen automatically without asking for your approval. It's a testing version, which is why they update frequently. You can use the rollback option, though some users report issues with it not working. If you need to revert, consider using a restore point or image backup. To remain on previews, joining the preview channel is better than the dev channel.
I appreciate the feedback. I’m not keen on reverting anything, as long as my PC functions properly. The main concern is whether others might think I should go back for reasons I’m not sure about, especially given the differences between W11 and W10. It seems mostly similar otherwise.
Many users have reported problems with games, especially notable issues.
I've faced problems with certain W10 releases before, (I've dealt with a lot of unstable builds over the years) and in some instances I rolled back without too much trouble. In milder situations I just waited for the next update and often it resolved itself. Probably I'll try more thorough testing later to confirm everything functions correctly.
Insider access ends if your project is outdated. When you were on Dev, you received Windows 11. You need to switch to the latest available build for your channel—Windows 10 is safe to revert if you wish. You have ten days to update, but your current version may already be expired, so consider leaving Insider if you don’t want to test beta releases.
