I’ve been using my dad’s old AVR 331 for some time, but we never used ARC. After skipping ahead, I finally got an ARC-compatible TV (Samsung 50” qn90D 2024). Still, I can’t get any sound through the speakers. I managed video and HDMI control, but audio remains elusive. I also tried streaming music from my PC to my stereo, which worked fine—my device was recognized as functional. However, no sound came out at all. I haven’t attempted a full factory reset yet, but I’ll give it a try soon. While reviewing troubleshooting steps, I noticed something unusual: the AVR might not support certain sound formats. It seems my AVR could be outdated and not running ARC properly. I was hoping to play the Bravely Default track through the stereo as well, so I tested different cables and confirmed both ports had ARC enabled. I also observed a ‘clicking’ noise when selecting sources for DVD and CD, but not for TV—possibly due to Odyssey settings activating. Maybe I should try adjusting the TV source option or checking the audio settings on the AVR? Any advice or confirmation would be great.

Then do so! Nothing is stopping you from having your samsung tv output sound over its other audio ports. Ive had heaps of trouble with arc. Lots and lots so really id just separate them out again and just have the tv be the video box and have it output audio to the reciever. If the pc also cannot trigger arc there may be an issue wirh the recievers arc settings or function so a reset might be a good idea of the box. Anything for bravely default osts!

I used the AVR 331 before receiving that Samsung TV. Did HDMI connect work with the AVR 331 at any time? Do you have another HDMI input option, such as a BD player or TV decoder? I’m not very familiar with your AVR, but I suspect it’s outdated enough to handle HDMI audio. Since this standard hasn’t changed much over time, it should still work with older devices that have an HDMI port. Good luck!

Exactly how devices are linked depends on your setup. For surround sound, use the TV HDMI IN (ARC) to the Receiver HDMI OUT 1 (ARC). If you don’t need surround sound, connect the TV’s TOSLINK output to the receiver’s TOSLINK input.

You're looking for a way to connect audio without using an optical cable. It sounds like you're considering alternatives like HDMI or another method. The advice about avoiding "arc" is likely related to timing issues, which could affect your setup. Since you're not planning to use AVR for 4K and want to keep things simple, you might not need ARC at all. If you really can't find a solution, you may need a different cable or method, but it would be a bit of a change from your current dream setup.

My ARC is set up on my TV (port 3) and ARC is streaming through HDMI 1 on the AVR, using a cable that performs at 10 meters.

It was just audio coming from the CD player before. My dad didn’t use the ARC feature during his ownership; instead, he’d use his DVD player to send it to the TV, though the TV itself doesn’t support ARC.

I located a PDF of the manual that specifies using an HDMI 1.4a or higher cable connected to the HDMI Monitor Out 1 port. https://www.denon.com/on/demandware.stat...ual-en.pdf Page 14: Important Note You might also need to adjust the audio codec on your television side. This could be compatible only with linear PCM.

You changed both settings to PCM but haven’t heard any sound yet. You mentioned you’ve been looking through the same manual in print for a while and still can’t get it to work—thanks for your patience!

They might grumble about it because arc technology wasn't widely used for a long time. It's older than HDMI and took a while to gain popularity. The timing was off—there was already existing TV, and you needed something really bad to make it worth the effort. Not at all! You can simply use a regular cable over that distance since your setup is basically just a stereo system.
