earlier this year my custom-built gaming rig began experiencing problems. It would either fail to boot or crash unexpectedly. Because upgrading felt too expensive, my dad and step-mom stepped in by giving me some money so I could afford a replacement. I upgraded from an X470 to an X470 crosshair 7 hero, originally with a Ryzen 2600, and now it runs a 3900xt board I got around six months after the pandemic started. Today, everything looks similar—same CPU and motherboard—but I’ve swapped in a 6700xt processor and a high-end 144Hz 1080p ASUS monitor. Still, I’m not satisfied with how things perform. It’s strange; I’m okay with most games, but the performance feels off. For the most demanding titles I’d probably stick to Stray and the RE4 remake. I’m stuck deciding whether to keep what I have or upgrade to something better.
Upgrading to another X570 won’t provide much improvement; you’ll likely just get more USB ports. If lag persists, the 3900X might be the issue—it’s a powerful but slow CPU. Switching to a 5700X3D would make sense if you can’t afford an AM5 build, which is the optimal choice. For graphics performance or higher FPS, consider upgrading the GPU; the 6700XT should handle 1080p well.
Upgrading to x570 won’t speed up your PC from 3900 to 5700x3d or 5800x3d as much as others suggest. Consider running some benchmarks to check performance and see if it meets expectations. When was your last clean Windows installation?
You're feeling frustrated since you're looking at Ryzen 5000 and 7000 specs. From my experience upgrading from 3700X to 5600X, it was a massive improvement, particularly in gaming. The jump from 5600X to 5800X3D was really impressive. Your X470 should handle the 5800X3D without any problems—just ensure you have good cooling. If you were me, I'd prefer staying with the X470 chipset and getting a 5800X3D plus Liquid Freezer III 360 instead of switching to a new x570 motherboard. If you wait a bit longer, there will be many more 5800X3D + X570 combos available soon on the used market when everyone who has them will be looking for them. When that happens, the X870e with 9800X3D should be a great choice.

@LpoolTech this is an older benchmark i did earlier this yea but i have since updated to the latest amd gpu driver when i did the fresh os install while performance for this game is great given the amount of fps i get i am still unhappy with my overal setup maybe i feel like my X470 mobo limits me idk it does suck that my gpu drops 2 pcie x8 with both m2 slots full
I believe there was a misunderstanding with the instructions. According to the guide for your M.2 device: the second PCIe x16 port will experience reduced performance if the second M.2 slot isn't ready. Placing your GPU directly into the top PCIe x16 slot ensures it runs in x16 mode regardless of whether both slots are filled. The notation PCIe_x8/x4 indicates the second PCIe slot, as detailed in the manual's diagram.
