Hello, I assembled a PC using an R5 3600xt with its built-in cooler. At idle it stayed around 68°C and reached highs in the 90s under heavy load. Recently, I swapped it for an AIO model, the NZXT M22. It has only a 120mm radiator but I opted for a slightly higher temperature because of appearance. Despite having three 140mm intake fans and one 140mm fan paired with the AIO running at full speed, I’m still seeing idle temps near 60°C, climbing to about 70°C when the AIO warms up and peaking at 95°C during Cinebench R23. Even when I shut down half of my cores and crank the CPU to 2200MHz, it stays in the high 50s at idle. Is this typical? (I haven’t overclocked, settings are default and balanced.) Can I lower the voltage to help? Would applying more thermal paste assist? Should I position the radiator as an intake or near the fans? The case is a dark base 700 with the front panel off for airflow. Running it at full speed with the radiator at the top, toward the left side near the motherboard IO, works fine for cooling. I shared this earlier but now think it’s better suited for troubleshooting since improvements aren’t coming easily.
The stock cooler isn’t suitable for your setup. I initially used it with my i3-4170 on a 90 mm fan, but soon realized it only handles non-gaming tasks like SD videos, internet browsing, and solitaire. Even older games such as NFS U2 struggled, the fan overheating, and without securing the radiator properly, it would have blown up.
Top-tier air coolers offer better value and performance compared to any 120mm AIO available. Purchasing the 120mm AIO turned out to be a poor decision.

It seems you were aware of the situation but the thermal paste might be an issue. Consider using Arctic MX4. Apply a standard amount—about pea-sized—and set a negative voltage offset of -200 in BIOS. This reduces peak temperatures by around 10°C on your 3600 without significantly impacting performance, as it helps keep things cooler and can improve efficiency.
A fully assembled closed-loop water cooling system includes the block, hoses, radiator, and fans in one package. High-quality models perform well, though they still have more failure points than standard air coolers. Compact versions will underperform compared to cheaper alternatives and aren't recommended unless you need space efficiency.
