Your cooler was placed incorrectly in the pre-built PC you purchased.
I purchased a prebuilt gaming PC in September and recently spotted an unusual issue while installing my new M.2 SSD. My cooler (Dark Rock Elite) appears to be improperly fitted. Upon opening the case, the central section moved, revealing it was simply placed without proper installation. The pins aren’t connecting because the heatsinks aren’t aligned. The only support came from the case’s glass panel. When I run Prime95 now, my CPU reaches 100°C in just two minutes. That’s quite alarming! Do you think there’s a way to fix this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
It's tough to grasp what's happening, but here are two suggestions. 1. If you're sure about it and comfortable disassembling the device (and you have all the screws from the cooler, even if they're missing), you can take it apart and reinstall it. Fresh thermal paste is advised, but as long as you avoid dust getting in, it should work. Watch this tutorial—it explains the process clearly. 2. Bring it back to the place where you purchased it. This could be the best option if you need specific screws or tools, or if you're not confident and want to prevent any damage.
I need to review the cooler manual and examine the steps without using my laptop. It’s not unusual for heatsinks to shift after installation, especially if they aren’t perfectly aligned with the GPU. Not being parallel isn’t necessarily a problem. It seems someone didn’t overly tighten it. This bothers me on my Noctua model—I usually check alignment at least once. Regarding the 100°C in prime 95, that might be typical. You didn’t specify the CPU or testing method. Prime95 applies heavy stress, and some modern chips require throttling to stay stable. I recall adjusting my 12900k with NH-D15 to manage temperatures. With the 13900k, I let it throttle naturally. The central fan section looks to snap without any noise, possibly indicating a loose component. I’m assuming this is the fan that came out misaligned. If so, it’s likely just the fan needing repositioning. It probably isn’t a major issue—just reinsert it carefully. This could simply be something moved during shipping; it doesn’t necessarily mean everything is failing.
Discovered the issue. Removed it and it was very bent, causing the center to misalign. After reshaping it as intended, it now fits properly.
The firm is based in Germany and is named Captiva. It seems quite absurd that they believed this would be fine. As mentioned, the heatsink was severely bent, causing only two of the four pins on top to connect properly... I have no clue how it could have been bent so much. One side was roughly 1.2 cm lower than normal, while another part was also bent 3-4 cm to the side. I’m really upset because this was my birthday gift for myself (after saving money for a year).
Return and file a complaint. A bent heatsink ID is bad because a bent heatpipe usually means its connections won’t work properly—often rendering it completely useless. Which CPU is this? It might just be that the cooler isn’t equipped enough for the chip.
