I've been using my Pre built PC for over five years without major problems until recently. Around early April, I noticed some issues where certain apps couldn't access the internet, even though my connection was strong. I've tried a lot of troubleshooting steps—resetting DNS, checking Windows firewall, reinstalling drivers, and even resetting the computer—but nothing resolved it. Now I can browse the web with Chrome, but logging into Microsoft always prompts me to connect to the internet and shows an error code that doesn’t help. Can someone assist me?

An update to Windows 11 (and maybe 10?) labeled Chrome as malware likely caused your problem. This update probably explains part of the issue. As I see it...

Perform a malware scan using Malware Bytes, then run Cleaner to remove any threats. If you don’t need to keep cookies, uncheck the option before proceeding.

Restart your setup If needed. Verify your connection is at home, public, or workplace. Certain applications may act unexpectedly on public networks. Which antivirus program are you using?

How exactly are you trying to log into Microsoft? What is the error code? Unlikely cause its windows defender *endpoint* that has this issue and i doubt OP has windows defender endpoint installed.

The error code 0x800704cf appears consistently when trying to log in or access services like Xbox Game Pass, the game bar, and the Microsoft Store. I used to have Webroot installed, but after reinstalling Windows it was removed, yet nothing changed.

It's not just Chrome; many games I attempt to play don't let the app access the internet. I've looked at the Windows Defender checklist for both public and private settings, and it permits both. However, it still flags me as offline or unable to connect.

I've also changed the internet connections, moving from AT&T regular to AT&T fiber, and updated the Ethernet cable.

I recall it began when I attempted a standard update and everything failed. I tried removing the updates, but it didn’t work.

What you mentioned earlier actually suggests a problem with the update. I think it would be best to reinstall Windows from scratch, preferably using a spare SSD—something that always helps in these situations. By the way, if you look up that error code online, there are thousands of suggested fixes... but in this case, replacing the network adapter usually works. Have you tried that already? Otherwise, it might be worth giving it another shot.
