TL;DR: PC won’t power on despite removing RAM and GPU. PSU tested fine, but after reseating cables and moving components, it still won’t start. Clicking the power button triggers a click then shuts off instantly. Fan runs briefly when pressed. RGB lighting is weak, only the power LED lights. Could indicate CPU or motherboard issue? Need guidance on further testing.

Welcome to the discussions! If you're referring to the tester that jumps the two pins on the 24-pin motherboard connector, that’s irrelevant. You need to use a load tester to properly check its condition. What are your system details?

Thank you for your feedback. This power supply is indeed rated as Tier A according to the PSU Tier List. It appears to be reliable, but running it for 36 hours hasn't revealed any obvious issues. The motherboard seems unresponsive, as the PSU cuts off abruptly, suggesting a possible short in the system. I recommend inspecting the CPU socket for bent pins and reinserting the CPU. Additionally, attempt booting the system from inside a cardboard box to observe any changes.

I’m unsure anything has shifted since my PC hasn’t moved much except for adjusting the back end so an HDMI connects to a TV in another room. I plan to check it out and reinsert the CPU, which will be my next move. I’ll follow up after trying that. I didn’t consider this reason, assuming it’s just to verify the motherboard or other parts aren’t shorting. After nearly ten years with the case and motherboard combo, I’d be surprised if that was the issue, but it’s preferable to replace the CPU or board. I’ll give it a go and see what happens. Thanks for your time and support. You’re the only one on multiple Reddit forums and Discord channels offering advice after my initial steps. Even if these don’t work, it means someone took the time to help. I rely on my computer for work and communication with friends back home. It’s been a long project—over a decade—and people like you make it possible for others to chase their goals without giving up. This is challenging, but I’m deeply appreciative. I often assume I understand everything until problems arise, and you not only assist but also educate newcomers. Your help means a lot to the positive side of the internet.

I'm confident there are no bent pins. It's good to double-check for any burn marks inside the socket just in case something happened. That makes sense—we should ideally test this on a fresh system before putting it in the PC case. I don't think anything static for months could cause a short without movement or contact. No worries at all! I totally get how frustrating it is when your daily computer stops working. This was a real issue when I had to return an RMA for a power supply and lost access to my rig for about a week. Also, what type of cooling solution do you use for the CPU? Are you using an air cooler or an AIO?

I own this large cooling unit (Noctua NH-D15 82.5 CFM CPU Cooler). My build includes six fans—two for the CPU and three for the GPU—all optimized to manage heat effectively with a powerful fan controller app. Updated October 16, 2023 by karrotguy.

That’s a lot more than enough and can be used again in other projects if needed. It might require extra parts from Noctua since they offer them free. I initially thought it could be an all-in-one unit, but then realized it might need additional hardware.

I really prefer maximum air cooling and would be surprised if it had anything to do with temperature control. I’m super focused on keeping things cool.

This did it! Where should I go from here? Just putting it back in the case and praying? And if it doesn’t work, gets new case? Edit: if it still don’t work, instead of a new case could I cover the back of the motherboard with electrical tape? Edited October 17, 2023 by karrotguy Had a new idea
