Hello! I attempted to set up Windows 8.1 for the first time on my main machine (i5 3570k, 16 GB DDR3, GTX 770...) using a flash drive with a 120GB OCZ Agility 3 SSD. As soon as the Windows logo appeared after booting and the circles shifted, I received a brief message in the title for about half a second: "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info and then we'll restart for you." This repeated until I manually turned off the computer. I really need assistance here—please advise if anyone knows how to fix this. Thank you! Shaxi
No, I didn't overclock the system or reset the BIOS. The AHCI is not enabled for your SSD.
Please share your computer's specifications to help us understand your issue better.
Tell us about the steps you took during installation—did you choose any custom settings?
Also, I noticed the message "we" sounds a bit intrusive; it makes me feel uneasy.
If you're comfortable, try booting in safe mode by pressing F8 or F9 after the BIOS screen. Let us know if that works.
It isn't overclocked at the moment. I reset the CMOS, which should help. AHCI is active now.
Apologies for the repeated update. We shared the information simultaneously. Let's review the case: Fractal Design defines R4 PSU, XFX Pro Series 650W Motherboard, AsRock Z77 Extreme4 RAM, Kingston HyperX Blu 4 x 4 GB @ 1600 MHz SSD, OCZ Agility 3 120 GB HDD. #1: Seagate Barracuda 2 TB HDD, #2: Samsung SpinPoint F3 1 TB CPU, Intel i5 3570k @ stock speed during setup, GPU: Gigabyte Windforce GTX 770 2 GB. I connected the flash drive, restarted and entered BIOS to set it as boot device, then rebooted. Immediately after startup, the system crashed with the error message previously reported.
You haven't installed the operating system yet, which could indicate an issue with your flash drive. Try inserting it into a different USB port on the PC and ensuring it's connected to the back of the device. If this doesn't resolve the problem, you might need to use another USB drive—check if it was formatted correctly. Since it boots into Windows, that's unlikely to be the cause.
Exactly. I'm not focusing on the configuration details; I just notice a short loading period and it disappears. Probably safe to test various ports, though it doesn't seem likely. EDIT: As expected, nothing altered significantly when moving to another USB connection.
Yes, it's odd, but some ports have higher priority etc. And like you said there's no harm done. We need to try and eliminate as many variables as possible. Hope it works
I switched from a USB 3.0 port to a 2.0 port but there was no improvement.
