Your AMD 5800X might benefit from an upgraded cooler for better performance and cooling efficiency.
Hello, I just purchased an AMD 5800X for around $350 after taxes. I’m swapping it into my existing gaming setup to reuse some parts. My main concerns are: should I replace the CPU cooler since the one I have is rated for 150W TDP and my CPU uses 105W? Also, am I getting a solid deal on a much better processor than my current i5 7500, considering market prices? Lastly, should I upgrade my RAM—either add another 16GB or get higher-frequency modules? My current setup has 16GB of 2400MHz RAM. Let me know.
It looks like this single tower cooler performs well. Overclocking the 5800x might not be feasible; testing it on the same board could help. If you notice persistent throttling and stuttering on the stock auto OC, consider upgrading to a better solution like the Thermalright PA120.
Make sure you have the 150W model. It won’t be amazing, but it should function properly. The 5800X generates a lot of heat because it’s a small CPU with a fairly large heat output on its limited surface area.
Thanks a lot! I'll install the cooler after getting the CPU and check performance, upgrading later if necessary. Edited Aug 18, 2021 by Quickren Typo
Run the cooler up there and observe the results. Consider adding 16GB DDR4 3200MHz RAM first, as shown in the link you shared. It offers good value for money. If your current setup isn’t handling it well, opt for a Scythe Fuma 2 for $60 and stop there. This model is large but maintains stable temperatures—often reaching 199 watts while staying under 75°C.
You're experiencing issues with heat dissipation in your 5800X, causing it to overheat. A better case or lower voltage settings could help manage the temperature. The cooler you have might not be sufficient for this model, especially if the case isn't well-ventilated.
