Hey, I’m following up about the same issues I’m facing with my G-Skill Trident Z 4x8 32GB RAM. Removing two of the RAM modules made it work fine on a 2x8 setup using an XMP profile, but not on the 4x8 configuration. It seems like @Kwikgta is correct—Ryzen performs better with two sticks instead of four.
I prefer using all four sticks at the advertised speed. It seems the voltage also increases. I'm starting with two sticks and will test three if they both hit 3200. Then I'll move to four. Adding sticks in this way might help me find the right setup.
Zen+ prefers not to run 4 Dimms; it should have received 2x8 sticks instead. You might try 2666mhz next time? Consider tightening the settings or using CL 14. Additional note: If it's running an odd number, adjust the frequency accordingly—like 2400—and ensure CL 15 is disabled in Gear Down Mode. Edited May 24, 2020 by ShrimpBrime
I tested 2x4 sticks at 3200 CL14 and 16, but neither setting functioned properly. Now I’m trying 2933 CL16 and 14. I’ll also check 3066 CL16 and 3066 CL16—both seem to work. Next, I’ll run the same test using three sticks.
Three sticks will trigger single channel mode. Don't waste time.
I decided to go straight to 3200 because of that. It works with three sticks. Actually, I rebooted into BIOS using three sticks and it returned to 2133. The CPU was running about 300 MHz slower. I reset it back to 3.8 on the CPU and set RAM to 3200, and now I'm checking.
