Unfortunately, things didnât go as planned. After getting my 980 AMP Extreme back, Iâd just begun using it again after letting a friend borrow it for a few years. It performed well for weeksâeverything seemed normal. I wasnât overclocked or anything. A few days ago, I noticed something was off. While playing WoW, it kept freezing on settings that should work. The 16GB RAM wasnât being used much. Tonight, after coming back from work, the Wi-Fi adapter kept dropping. Then it froze when I tried to adjust network settingsâsomething odd and random Iâd seen before with failing CPUs. After a restart, it worked fine. Later, while downloading an update, it crashed completely. When I tried to restart it, my Z68 kept showing the âCâ error code. I thought maybe the cheap PSU was the issue, so I connected the HX750I from my 8350/Fury Nitro rig. I kept going through the troubleshooting. I removed the water block and checked if the pins were bentâlooks good. Everything else is fine; fans spin nonstop, power is on, RAM is secure. I have no reason to think itâs the motherboard, especially with the earlier warnings. Iâm relieved it wasnât a hardware problemâthis was a real disappointment. Still, I loved this 2600K; it was the first CPU that really impressed me when it launched.
Thanks everyone, I appreciate the kind words. I'm feeling better now that I know I can swap it for just $50. Time to hang it up.
