With my 3070 Suprim X approaching, I need my CPU to begin the build. A 5900x is ideal, but hard to find and often expensive (750+ USD). The 5800x is a cheaper option at 530 USD, or I could opt for an Intel 10900k at 570 USD. Since I plan to use it for gaming and streaming, I want it to last. Ideally, I’d keep the same CPU and motherboard for eight years, then upgrade the GPU once after four years. A twelve-core 5900x offers the best performance and multi-core value. I’m open to spending up to 750 USD on a Ryzen 9 5900X, which would save me 130 USD compared to the 10900k. Considering price efficiency and longevity, what’s the best choice? (I’m in Europe, but prices are shown in USD.)

The 5900x offers superior single-threaded capability and more cores compared to the 10900k, justifying its higher price. For an eight-year lifespan, I’d choose the 5900x because it provides the most cores and top-tier performance. Of course, I’m unsure if I’ll ever own a CPU that long, but going for the 5900x seems like the best decision.

That's the idea. I imagine a GPU upgrade after three years, with a full overhaul every six years.

With these rates I’d choose the 5800x model. The 10,900k only just justifies itself if there’s a big savings.

I own an R7 5800x and an i9 10900k. To me, the i9 matches the value of the R7 while the R9 exceeds it. The same applies to the newer 11th generation i9s. The i9 performs better in AAA titles at 1440p and 4K resolution, whereas the R7 shines at 1080p. Neither is running overclocked. I purchased the R7 5800x specifically for building games like Space Engineers, which can save a thousand hours of old saves and won’t run smoothly on a 5GHz all-core Intel CPU with heavy overclocking, but it works fine on the R7. The i9 also handles them smoothly thanks to its 5.3GHz boost clock, though it matches my i7s and 8-core i9s only when running at 5GHz all-core overclock. Both models will eventually be upgraded as IPC CPUs improve, likely sooner for the i9 than the R7.
