friend was attempting to play a game but someone instructed him to modify the EXE reg file from exe to %1". Now he cannot launch any .exe program, not even system apps. The task manager won’t open, and he can’t run anything as admin either. Anyone have suggestions?

Typically, altering registry values without certainty is not advisable. Errors can be acceptable if they provide valuable lessons. Employ Glarysoft's registry repair tool to resolve issues in the registry (run in safe-mode with network connectivity): https://www.glarysoft.com/registry-repair/

thank you for your assistance. the issue is opening any.exe files, and it looks like windows has disabled the administrator account. i can't even ask the admin to run cmd as admin or open regedit with elevated privileges. even simple tasks like checking task manager aren't working. he attempted a system reset, which brought the machine to 50% before triggering an error and forcing a restart.

Start in safe mode with networking, then install Glarysoft's registry fixer and check if the app launches.

Thanks again, unfortunately I've already attempted it and the same problems persist. Can't launch the executable or run as administrator. It seems like a Windows reinstall is happening now since someone else tried to install a questionable version of BlackOps 2.

They're managing it now, but it's still not working properly—two failures already.

I’ll handle his fingers next time he messes with the regeditor. Hahaha. Even those who know computers have nothing to do there. But unless you locate the precise change (and even then opening it now is tricky), a reinstall or restoring the previous state might be your only chance. I don’t like saying that much—it feels like just an excuse. There should always be a solution available.

I understand, I struggle with this too—I run a free remote support service and try to assist whenever possible, but I’m stuck trying to fix this issue myself.

Do you have system restore enable or any kind of system backup? This is where system backup and restore is very useful.
