I’m checking my Phenom x3 with 4GB DDR3 1333 and a $20 Liteon 120GB SSD. It feels like loading YouTube takes a second, but I’m not sure if it’s due to low RAM or a slower CPU. To figure out if upgrading RAM is needed, you can test how long your system stays responsive during web browsing and gaming. A noticeable lag under load often points to memory issues rather than processor speed.

Launch Task Manager to check memory consumption. Is it exceeding 95%? You might benefit from additional RAM. Naturally, it's hard to predict whether upgrading will justify itself given the system's age and current condition.

High RAM usage in the task manager suggests upgrading your RAM. This helps identify whether the issue lies with the CPU or memory. If the problem is RAM-related, clearing Windows features might help, though it could remove some functionality.

Most updates to Windows since XP will trigger a warning and sound when memory is nearly full. The computer will move data to the page file, beginning with background and idle processes. When an application consumes a lot of RAM, it stays in system memory and the page file, causing significant slowdowns. It would be useful to note the operating system you're running.

Windows 10 seems to be managing memory differently—perhaps it’s using built-in optimizations that limit how much RAM you see. You might not notice issues until you run intensive tasks like memory tests.

They're actually quite efficient with memory and page file usage. Much better than W7. Given the slow hardware—Phenom X3 (Agena first-gen core at around 2.6GHz) with poor IPC for W10 standards—you probably won't feel a big difference. The SSD should handle the workload as long as you have enough space. When this machine stops working, the performance gap compared to a newer build will be enormous. Just imagine the wow factor!

I adjusted my setup from Ryzen to i9-10900f. I’m still using the older Phenom II model since I sold my CPU and motherboard. This thread came about because I’m curious about upgrading from 16GB to 32GB RAM, especially since my current 4GB system feels tight. The change won’t drastically impact everyday tasks like browsing, but switching to an SSD would really improve performance. Even with the Phenom running fine on a budget SSD, the upgrade makes a noticeable difference.
