I use an old Windows Vista computer for making and saving music files. Even though I never turn on the internet right now, I still need it to connect to my local network so I can move music to a shared drive. My new router used to block all internet access before. If I ever change the router again, how can I stop that blocking from happening?
Does the Vista rig get its own special internet key (IP) or does it ask your router for one automatically? If the Vista rig has only a regular internet key and no specific name (DNS), it won't be able to connect to the internet.
Easier to say: give each computer its own private IP without any special gateway. You probably still need DNS to find other devices on the same network.
To give your computer a unique address, you need to find out what range of addresses the router allows. If you can't see anything else, try using an IP like 250. If your current IP is something like 192.168.0.xxx, just change it to 192.168.0.250. Most routers give out low numbers first so they probably won't run out of high ones for you.
