A few weeks back I upgraded my AM4 motherboard. While removing the cooler from the CPU, it pulled the chip out of its socket. Upon checking, I saw a few bent pins. I gently straightened them, and the CPU slid in easily into the new socket on my new board—though I did encounter some boot problems that resolved themselves later. The CPU is a Ryzen 7 2700. A few days ago, I attempted to overclock it using some guides I found. Since I’ve been overclocking CPUs since the old Intel Pentium 4 era, I’m not a beginner. Last night I ran a Prime95 Bland test, went to sleep, and woke up to discover my system shut down unexpectedly. The average temperature reported by Ryzen Master was around 73°C on my 360mm AIO. Could the bent pins be responsible for these shutdowns? Are there other ways to verify stability with stock BIOS settings? Might it be that even though I straightened them, the bent condition still caused issues? I should have noticed earlier that random shutdowns under stress testing preceded the resolved boot problems. Here’s a summary of my system: ASUS CH7 X470, AIO motherboard, Team Group Vulcan, DDR4 16GB (2x8GB), 3000MHz RAM, Sapphire Pulse TXR 5700, Seasonic Focus Gold 750W, semi-modular PSU, 512GB SSD, wired internet. The BIOS is version 2901, and HWInfo64 confirms the pump spins at 4500 RPM—no overheating concerns. I’m hoping my CPU isn’t overheating or throttling, but I’m curious if this matters. If the pins were fixed, would that prevent the shutdowns?
Bent pins often lead to problems. While setting up the CPU, gently move the lock in and out a few times to help the pins settle properly. With my 1200, I sometimes need to re-seat certain pins during removal because some are bent. The CPU works just fine, but a few pins fail to make contact, leaving the system with only the LED active. So far, this has been my experience with bent pins. However, after it boots up, I haven’t noticed any stability concerns, though I did a lot of pounding on it during installation. It reached around 4.4GHz with that powerful unit.
It got quite severe, the bend pins are appearing early. You left it on overnight, probably it fell asleep. I’ve had a terrible sleep before, so I turned it off now for a while.
The test caused my sleep to stop immediately at the beginning.
