the system runs but it's quite old. with a limited budget now—after losing an ipad—it’s down to about $200—and i need a solid motherboard upgrade that fits my amd athlon cpu and en8600gt graphics card.

I need to know your current processor model. There are many different Athlon chips, and most are quite outdated. Which one are you running?

Here are the detailed specifications you requested. For a motherboard upgrade, consider replacing the outdated Athlon II CPU with something modern like an Intel 3rd Gen or an i5 processor available on platforms such as eBay. Since you’re unsure of your system’s requirements, a generic suggestion is to choose a more recent chipset and a reliable motherboard that supports your intended use.

Location? Based on the 8600 GT GPU, it seems your system is from around 2007. That places you in the AM2+ era, whereas Core 2 Quads have kept some relevance this decade. Spending more on an AM2+ setup doesn’t make sense anymore. In the US, consider a Dell Optiplex X90 or X010. An Optiplex 390 with an i5-2400, 8GB RAM and a 500GB drive can be found on eBay for $120-130 with free shipping. Use the remaining $70-80 to buy a GTX 1050, possibly a 1050 Ti if you manage the price. Ideally, you’d have a 1080p capable gaming rig with a GTX 1050 or a 1080p optimized one with a GTX 1050 Ti. It makes sense to check local listings like Craigslist, Letgo, Offerup, or FB Marketplace if you’re in a busy area.

Be mindful of older systems. Using a Q67 express chipset will prevent the 3770 from working. A 7010 offers reliability, works well with a correctly sized ATX power supply and a Q77 express chipset.

Thanks for the assistance. I wasn't expecting any replies, but here are the complete details: AMD Athlon 64 x2, 1 GB DDR2 RAM, En8600GT GPU, ASUS M2N4-SLI motherboard, Dynex 400W power supply, and a Western Digital 160GB hard drive. Your note about the system being from 2007 is accurate—I didn't realize that at first. I was planning to upgrade the motherboard for more RAM capacity, thinking it would be cheaper than replacing the whole machine, but after reading all the advice, it seems better to purchase most new parts. I'm based in Maryland, and due to privacy concerns, I can't share much specifics online. I also attached a photo of the setup. Although it won't win any awards, I appreciate the cooler Master case. If everything goes smoothly, I'll update you soon. P.S. Sorry for any confusion with the original post title—I meant it was my mom's old workstation, mainly used for CAD and similar tasks (she was an architect), and it was given to me because I wanted a computer; it was recently brought back to mind.

You can find a used Dell OptiPlex, similar to the 7010, at a low price. Just add a solid power supply and any graphics card you prefer.
