I connected the Xbox and noticed it’s updating before showing the update screen. It seems a restart might be enough. Since there’s no controller included, using a keyboard won’t help. Let me know if you need further guidance!

Did you purchase it secondhand or brand new? If you got it used, it makes sense why the previous owner decided to sell it. Regardless, return it if you wish.

What xbox is this? What controller did you plug into it? It may have been sold due to bootlooping from a failed update

You must have a controller to determine if recovery is possible or if the console is unresponsive.

Seek any Xbox One controller that fits Series S or console models—it’s likely affordable. Pair it with an Xbox and press reset; it should function properly, and you won’t mind using a budget controller either.

I'll attempt to borrow a controller from someone to check if I can reset the console.

It might help if you reinstall the operating system after resetting the console.

It's an Xbox One, maybe I should have included that in the title. Right now I don't have a controller to test. If the update didn't work, can I simply erase the hard drive and reinstall the Xbox operating system?

It's possible. You'll require a controller in any case to carry out the updates or reinstalls. The device must be an Xbox One.
