Back in 2020 I chose to upgrade macOS on my 2010 Unibody MacBook to run Catalina (using DosDude1) and later Big Sur (via the links provided). Although my machine still boots, it isn’t functioning perfectly. I’ve observed some strange issues: the battery sometimes fails to charge. Temporarily clearing the SMC resolved the problem, but it didn’t persist after a reboot. Apple’s compatibility checker for apps occasionally flags the system as incompatible. Usually, updating the OS fixes this, though it can be frustrating when using an outdated image. During a fresh OS X Snow Leopard install, the speakers weren’t detected—this was fixed with an update but remains a hassle. I suspect these patches altered kexts or drivers. Even after a complete SSD wipe, the system firmware seems changed. Back then I wasn’t as tech-savvy, so I thought the updates were limited to the OS level only. I acknowledge any damage I caused was my own, not the patcher’s fault; their work is impressive! Now this Mac isn’t my primary device and doesn’t hold important files. In summary, I’m wondering if it’s possible to reflash my old Mac back to a clean firmware version. Thank you!
