You're just starting with overclocking and have an ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0 motherboard. While you won't reach high speeds like 5GHz, it's possible to achieve a moderate boost such as 4.5GHz.

It's mainly low quality with a four-phase configuration (basically a pro 3 plus heatsinks).
Several users have reported problems running 8350s at stock, especially on OC.
If I had that setup working stably with an 8350, I'd feel fortunate and keep bios settings unchanged.
An 8-core processor at 4.5ghz isn't a small overclock; the board requires 1.45v+ and those VRMs won't handle it without overheating.

what's your best bet? usually, when those chips get hot, it's a problem. this isn't the ideal overclocking setup, but if you manage to keep the CPU cool, you should be fine or even better.

Wouldn't be wise to push an 8-core processor beyond its limits on that board, it wouldn't be suitable

It wouldn't make sense to overclock an 8-core processor on that board—it's not suitable. You might be worried it can't meet the required power needs. This could be due to insufficient power VRMs and delivery systems.
