I'm researching how to assemble a mini PC using the DeskMini X300 from ASRock. The motherboard appears to use an X300 chipset. I'm considering using a 5700G CPU, but I'm unsure if that's feasible without an older model first so I can update the BIOS for Ryzen 5000 chips. I'm wondering if this is the right path and what would be the best approach. I'm thinking of purchasing a budget-friendly X300-compatible CPU from a second-hand marketplace like eBay, though I'm not sure it's common in Belgium. Alternatively, should I explore another bareboard option? If you have any suggestions for Intel or AMD builds, that would help. I mainly want a setup suitable for running a small server and playing games. Thanks ahead!
It would work well on Linux. A compact MC server could run smoothly for gaming sessions with friends, and you're currently using a rental server for other needs like Discord bots, test environments, and CI/CD builds (Jenkins). You might want to check higher-end models just in case.
I plan to explore this further. Based on what I found, USFF systems tend to cost more than a budget DeskMini PC with a 5700G, RAM, and a decent case (around 500, using an M.2 drive). It seems challenging for a similar-priced USFF to include 64GB of RAM. I’ll consider a DeskMini with Intel, check pricing, or look into older AMD options or an older CPU upgrade to boost the BIOS.
Lacks an IGPU and the speed is terrible. It performs even worse than an i5 2400.
I only plan to use it for upgrading the BIOS, like adding a 5700G. Do you need an iGPU for that? (I guess you can view the BIOS without one, but without it it might not work.)
