I assembled my initial computer in the summer and missed getting the game before it left the Steam store. LATER: I should have mentioned I already have it on Epic, though I’d rather play it on Steam—not just because I don’t like Epic, but because the game feels quite bland there.
Epic Games acquired the business behind it, and it is now available for purchase on the Epic Games Store.
Top trusted sellers have taken the keys off their platforms, making it hard to justify keeping a game available only for free-to-play. It’s unclear how much of a difference you’ll notice switching between Epic and Steam. The Steam version still requires linking an Epic account to access online play.
You only need to be able to start the game via Steam. The Steam and Epic versions should feel identical. You can include non-steam titles in your Steam collection, which lets you launch the Epic edition of Rocket League through Steam. In your collection, tap "add a non-steam game" at the bottom left, choose browse, go to the Epic Games Launcher folder, and pick the .exe for Rocket League.
