Instead of just recommending he move on, I’d personally advise going with Acronis. It makes copies of your hard drive, though it’s a bit pricey. Still, it’s definitely worth the investment.
Clonezilla is free and performs well. I just installed the program and recorded the ISO onto a DVD. For backing up my SSD, I simply inserted the DVD and restarted my computer. The software offers its own interface where I select what to copy and where to save it. It takes around 10 minutes to back up and another 10 minutes to reinstall the clone. This method is effective against malware and viruses as well. Windows 7 (and possibly Windows 8) also supports ISO backups. I attempted it, but it didn’t work... though it might for you.
