I connect my primary system and most stationary gadgets with Ethernet ports to a gigabit router, switch, and powerline adapter. I set up separate WiFi hotspots for the upper and lower floors, leaving other devices like laptops, phones, tablets, eReaders, and handheld consoles to run elsewhere.
I have wired Ethernet, so I can wire my desktop and also laptop when using it at my desk. The WiFi I have is decent, but just not as reliable and fast as Ethernet.
I have 10 gb connected on my desktop and server for maximum internet performance, while keeping wireless active on all laptops. I wire every device in the room—TVs and other equipment—as well as my UniFi network, because wired gives me more reliability and lets me stream 4K HDR at home. Plex doesn’t handle tonemapping well, so I need to play files directly from my Blu-ray without converting them.
