Support the team's suggestions. They were right to suggest this. All Ryzen 5/7 models will struggle to reach 4/4.1, which appears to be the upper limit, especially with good cooling. You might manage around 3.8, but it will require some precise adjustments to hit that number. I chose the 1600 to skip the trouble of modifying the 1600, as everyone recommended.
But can you reach 4.0? Your title indicates you're aiming above 4.0. If conditions are stable, I'd be satisfied. Also, as the previous poster mentioned, I achieved an 1600x for that reason, along with improved chances of hitting higher memory frequencies (currently at 3200), and I don't plan to use the stock cooler. For me, it added $30 CDN for the 1600x, making it a clear choice.
the only reason i received the 1600 was because i was on holiday in canada during a sale, and i thought i could trade it in for a 1600x since i'm 5000 miles away. managed to get it to 4000 with a 1.3875v, but it crashes when it hits 60c now, which is really upsetting.
Similar to 1 in 15 1600s models, hitting over 4.0 is rare. Ryzen 4.0 offers similar performance, and a few 1800s models can reach 4.2 at most.
Somewhat similar to the situation where only 1 in 15,600 hits exceeded 4.0, especially with a Ryzen 4.0, which is essentially as good as any you'd get; a few 1800s will cap at 4.2 most of the time. That's why I expected better overclocking options from AMD.
It's just the limits of the chip. It has been examined quite thoroughly in the reviews. Many people choose the 7700k because it often reaches 5ghz and is significantly faster than the Ryzen lineup. Although AMD has made a solid comeback, that's why I went with them myself.
