Hello, I own an A320m Pro-VH motherboard and all the necessary components for a PC except the CPU. I plan to install a Ryzen 5 4500 and read somewhere that I need to update my BIOS to use it. I purchased the CPU about a year ago and haven't updated my BIOS yet, since I don’t have any other AM4 CPUs. My friends don’t use AMD CPUs either. Can I still update my BIOS with this new CPU, or do I really need to?

It depends on the current BIOS version. It should function, though there were issues as well.

I’d just make the update anyway, as it can enhance stability, security, and performance too. Keeping the latest tools is always a smart choice.

The problem lies in the op not supporting any other AM4 CPUs.

The Ryzen 5 4500 was released more than a year ago, so as long as the motherboard hasn’t been unused for over a year and was made recently, it should already have BIOS support for that processor. Generally, new boards come with the most up-to-date BIOS, meaning a board shipped in December 2021 likely lacks compatibility. If it arrived in June 2022, it probably does have the right BIOS installed. The chances are better, though not certain.

Ask the store to refresh the details for you. I’d rather suggest getting a budget ch341a bios programmer with some Dupont female jumpers to update the BIOS through the jspi1 header beneath the CPU socket. Match the pin configuration between the ch341a and the header, and you’re set to flash. The main benefits are eliminating the risk of damaging your BIOS and being able to update externally. Instead of the outdated a320 model that restricts overclocking, you can run the B350m Pro VH Plus BIOS and achieve a stable 4500 MHz allcore performance.

I faced a comparable scenario when selecting components for a fresh computer, and the Computer Shop Service refreshed the BIOS for my new motherboard at no cost.
