Eliminate any doubts about your setup before purchasing a NIC. Otherwise, you're just wasting parts and money without solving the real issue. Do you have another functioning computer you can test on that network cable? Or could you move your PC near the switch or router temporarily using a short patch cable you know works well? Are you connected via a 100 megabit Fast Ethernet switch, or is it a 10/100 port at the other end? What motherboard do you have, and which switch or router are you linking to? Restart it, but don't need to reset Windows completely for this.
