I constructed my initial personal computer two years ago and have been satisfied with its performance. Yet, my download speeds consistently reach a maximum of 7mbps. We subscribe to either 400 or 940mbps plans. While this isn’t a major issue most times, it becomes problematic when downloading large games or videos, which take significantly longer than others’. I’m using a Netgear night hawk router directly connected to my PC. Are there any limitations I’m missing or changes I should make to fully utilize my internet speed? My build will be shared so you can see the motherboard details.

MB/s or megabits per second are acceptable; which model is being discussed? Is this relevant for services such as Steam, or does it cover all downloads? What modem and internet provider are you connected with?

WiFi performance is based on assumptions. Many factors can affect it. Consider using an Ethernet connection to see if you get a more stable speed.

He mentioned he's permanently connected to the router and isn't using Wi-Fi. @Rana_Loca I'd try logging into your router or modem directly to check its reported speed (not just the Nighthawk, but also your ISP modem if you can access its web interface—it should display the actual download speed it can provide). It's a good idea to verify that the WAN port on the Nighthawk shows a 100 Mbps or gigabit connection to your cable box or router. You might also want to see if a firmware update is available for the Nighthawk. Could you run speed tests on other devices in the house, like phones or computers? Seeing how fast they connect will help determine if the issue lies with your modem or elsewhere.
