She gave me a Windows 8.1 CD last year for my new machine. Now I’ve finally got a reverse copy of Windows 10 and want to switch it out soon. After upgrading, can I run the Windows 8.1 disc on another desktop while keeping mine working? Is that copy tied to just one computer? I also have another built system that needs Windows.

No, that's incorrect. Installing Windows 10 updates the hardware identification and creates a new code, which doesn't rely on the previous key.

But the idea remains being copied. Purchase one key upgrade for ten uses, or buy another upgrade elsewhere to reach ten. It's just a small gap that is permitted.

When not mentioned in the terms and conditions of Windows, it doesn't qualify as piracy since both are legally obtained keys.
