Hello everyone, I’m based in Canada. I came across some guides about how U.S. users can connect with ISPs using their own modems. I spoke with Shaw earlier today and they mentioned they won’t give internet without using their gear. Is that reasonable? I understand my requirements and have bought the necessary equipment. Are there any better ideas or advice you could share? I’ve already filed a complaint with CCTS. See you all!

It's common to rely on the ISP's modem in various locations, particularly with cable services.

Your local internet provider maintains a catalog of compatible modems, and when you requested a non-WiFi model, they provided suitable options. In many instances, they can supply devices that fit your requirements, and you often have the flexibility to set up your own WiFi network to meet your needs.

Leting customers access untested hardware poses serious security threats and complicates troubleshooting. It’s completely acceptable for them to restrict this. Just as water providers don’t let you connect via your own lines or electricity companies don’t permit direct infrastructure modifications, ISPs shouldn’t allow the same.

In the US, FCC rules require certain services to use ISP equipment. You can't just pick up a modem at Best Buy; it’s tied to your provider’s setup. Some companies like Charter let customers use their own modems, but they often don’t offer much help—no firmware updates or support. My internet company, Comcast, not only keeps their modems current but also tests them to ensure proper function and offers a selection of retail models you can purchase.

If security is a major concern, I can grasp it easily.
