I own an Aerohive AP250 POE wireless access point that was relocated after the office move. It previously connected via a POE Ethernet line and functioned properly. The Hivemanager app is the only known method to operate it, but it costs around $2,000—much higher than what I’d need for a single wireless device. I’m wondering if there’s another firmware version that could work with any modem or router without Hivemanager ($60 for a POE switch would be reasonable). Alternatively, should I consider selling it for about $350–400 on eBay and finding a simpler solution that fits the device? Since I’m unfamiliar with PoE technology, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I checked the link you shared. It seems to discuss an aerohive without a manager, but I’m not certain it matches your specific model. Even if it functions, it might still be problematic depending on your setup.

I haven’t used any Aerohive device before, though I think it’s comparable to enterprise network subscriptions. If earlier owners utilized it, they likely had a valid reason and the resources to pay yearly. Usually, the expense comes from specialized support and regular updates provided by makers. Some models include unique services that might not be necessary for you. For my setup at home, I’m not a big supporter of these recurring fees, but I understand their value in bigger organizations. If an IT team needs flexible upgrades and frequent changes, a subscription could fit. You’ll need to check if the company truly gains from a $2000/year bill just for WiFi or if a simpler, equally good option would be wiser. If you only want dependable wireless access, selling the Aerohive might free up funds for better alternatives like Ubiquiti or UniFi APs.
