You're considering a mix of 2x8GB and 1x16GB storage. It's generally safe to use this setup, but stability may vary depending on your workload and usage patterns. Ensure your system is well-maintained and consider monitoring performance to confirm it meets your needs.

Yes or no. If you don’t use a matching set, the processor will run only in single channel mode, reducing speed roughly in half. You’ll also miss enabling XMP. (This applies even if you paired a 2x16GB kit with a 2x8GB one) The safest choice is to purchase another 2x8GB unit with identical specifications.

Unless you require a lot of memory, I’d just add another 2x8. 32GB is more than enough for most tasks. You’re free to run things your way, though the 1x16 will operate on a single channel and sacrifice some speed. Do you need 48GB? Because you’re planning to possibly purchase another 16, just get the 2x8 now and keep the same 32GB capacity. It will work just fine.

It will operate with dual channel for the 2x8gb and single channel for the remaining 16gb. This setup means data will travel slower in flex mode, but it shouldn't significantly affect performance for games or other tasks. You'll still benefit from the first 16gb using dual channel, and as long as frequencies match, the impact will be minimal. In extreme cases, you can adjust settings manually to align them. Flex mode works as long as XMP settings remain consistent, and you can begin with default configurations to adapt both systems.

It relies on the RAM speed and setup. It should definitely function at lower rates. Likely to work well at medium speeds. If you proceed, allocate 16GB on one lane and 2x8GB on the other. This should keep dual-channel operation across the full memory range. If you add another 16GB later, set both channels to 16+8. Opinions vary here. For XMP, as long as it stays within the IMC limits, it should still perform adequately.

OP didn't discuss frequency details and it's unclear whether they're using Intel or AMD. Therefore, I'm taking the worst-case scenario (AMD on AM4 socket can barely handle 2 sticks above 3600, 4 sticks with varying speeds would be risky). That's why I agreed and disagreed. For the best stability on AMD Ryzen 3rd gen, the approach I recommended would be ideal.

I think 3600, seen as fast, might be tough with just two modules on one channel. If the OP is really after volume, gaining that speed could be worth it.

If you add another 8GB, it will still be the same configuration. A single channel setup might be slower, but 16GB would provide more memory overall.

It will remain in flex mode with the third stick operating on a single channel, while the first two use dual channel. Do you really require this additional capacity? You weren't sure about it.

It seems Hogwarts actually shows you how game developers sometimes overlook optimization. Extra RAM can really help with stutters and staff, so I’m adding two more 8GB sticks to avoid those issues compared to the 16GB version.
