My refurbished Sapphire rx570 nitro+ had thermal issues that caused crashes under heavy use. After taking it apart, I saw the VRAM and some chips had damaged thermal pads. The only solution is to buy more thermal paste, which will be delivered on the 25th.

Thermal pads are typically placed in areas with minor spacing between the part and the cooler, which suggests this setup may not be ideal

Not suggested though it could help. You'll likely overapply force while installing and push the paste away from its intended spot. Consider enhancing the existing setup with thermal paste. Edited July 20, 2023 by leclod

It seems the thermal pads are either contaminated or the thermal paste was applied incorrectly.

Performed furmark at 1280x1024 achieved 124 fps. Temperatures climbed to 56°C and remained steady for a few minutes until the PC failed. (Used dirty thermal pads and fresh paste on the core.)

You might boost the fan rates. Lower the GPU voltage or clock speed. It could be another issue. Thermal pads tend to stay intact (they appear damaged only when needed). Edited July 20, 2023 by leclod

No. Flat out no. Thermal pads are there to make up a difference in height. Thermal paste is a micro gap filler NOT meant for this. It can work but then again I've had multiple dead gpu's of people using thermal paste on their vrms and stuff which then didnt work even with heaps dumped on it and the card died. What is horrible state? If they are ripped thats kinda fine just puzzle them back. Basically have patience and don't destroy your gpu because you cant wait 5 days.

Consensus reached. It seems thermal dynamics were designed with this paste to fill a 1mm gap effectively, though performance drops at 2mm and becomes unreliable beyond 3mm. Adding a metal shim between the paste improves results.
