I own an ASRock B450 gaming motherboard with a 1300X chipset. I’m thinking about moving to the 5800X and wondering if I can upgrade the BIOS using my 1300X. I know I’ll need to switch afterward, so I’m planning to wait for the new board but I want to confirm it’s still doable. Also, since the machine runs Linux as a headless server, will the 5800X fit in my current motherboard? Thanks for your help!

You can upgrade to the newest BIOS for your 1300X by downloading it from ASRock's website and using their Instant Flash tool. For updates before the 5800X is released, it’s not advised—while the 1300X may support the new BIOS, compatibility isn’t guaranteed.

Hey team, I understand support is being removed for 1300X and I need to stick with P4.20. Thanks for confirming it’s feasible. I’ll likely swap the RAM too. Should I pick a specific clock speed or performance factor?

The 5xxx series performs best with 3600 MHz and minimal delays (targeting CL16), though I'm uncertain if the board can support frequencies above 3200 MHz. Adding extra memory might not be worth it just for that speed, especially since it only has two slots. This setup is ideal for high-frequency operation and overclocking, but as an ITX design, components are tightly packed, which can increase noise and potentially limit RAM performance. QVL ratings show a maximum of 3200 MHz tested, with some models reaching up to 3466 MHz. Running at 3200 or 2933 MHz is feasible, though a 3200 MHz stick might be slightly cheaper if you plan to upgrade later. Unless you expect to reuse the sticks on another compatible board, it may not be necessary.

Usually I’ll pick the most affordable option in the 3200-3600 range, as the next upgrade might come with a DDR5 board.
