We received chromebooks with limited storage and some gaming capability. I’m curious about running a game from a USB drive using ChromeOS. Since ChromeOS doesn’t handle many file formats well, I understand it won’t support .exe files. If the game is already fully downloaded on the USB, I was thinking it might work to launch it directly. Any suggestions?

Compatibility isn't only about add-ons. Actually, add-ons aren't important, they just show what kind of file you have.

The only way to run anything besides Chrome and certain Android apps is by installing Linux on the device.

Even with the USB drive, Chrome OS lacks the necessary drivers to access file formats. The alternative would be a porting solution.
