Occasionally when I wanted to turn off my laptop, it would shut down without any alerts or prompts. This was frustrating. Before, if I had a program running, shutting it down would show a warning asking if everything was okay. Now, even with something like VMware running, that message doesn’t appear. I looked up a solution online but it didn’t help. It still powers off unexpectedly. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Are you using Windows 10 Home or Pro? I just turned on "Display Shutdown Event Tracker" on Windows 10 Pro and now get a prompt when I click shutdown asking for a reason. It seems that setting this option might not work on Home, or it could be affected by hardware keys. You can also adjust Power Options, select what the power buttons do, and choose "Do nothing" when they're pressed.
I understand your point. But to be clear: yes, it’s possible. It functions similarly to what happens when you power down or restart your system without saving a project or document. Windows can detect shutdown/restart events and prompt the system to pause or cancel, allowing you to decide. You’d need to create a program that mimics these events and APIs, or simply adjust how the power button responds. Your top choice would be modifying the power button behavior as suggested.
It functioned previously in that way. When an app was active, it would prompt: there are apps open, do you still want to continue? I could have canceled it, but for some reason that stopped. I don’t know why.
