I was merely tapping my keyboard while TM was running and CTRL stopped it? I thought that sooner would have prevented so many accidental Spotify beheadings.

Resource Monitor is another helpful utility. It proves particularly valuable because of its responsiveness, which can be limited otherwise. You might also adjust the refresh rate in Task Manager to achieve a comparable outcome.
