the prebuilt system came with an a8 5500, 8 gigs, and an f2a85-m mobo. I installed an evga gtx 950 ssc and an evga 430 watt 80+ psu. if i were to replace the heatsink, would the cpu still be able to overclock? thanks!

Hello friend.
Yes, since this motherboard includes a digital and heat-sinked VRM, you can safely overclock your CPU. I doubt you have a locked BIOS either. It's still an ASUS board. Just update the BIOS via the ASUS website if needed.
I suggest using the Hyper 212 EVO CPU cooler. It offers good cooling performance for its price and, being air-cooled, air flows over the VRM and out of the back of your case. That's crucial.
Don't forget to set up a suitable case fan system. Both intake and exhaust matter equally.

Prebuilt systems usually come with a secured BIOS that blocks overclocking. Switching to another motherboard might be an option, but it wouldn't be a good deal.
